Bills vs. Bears

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,This Week's Matchup Report by ravenhater on Wednesday 4 October 2006 at 6:34 pm

The Bills have played over their heads so far this season and have an extremely hard test ahead at Soldier Field on Sunday. The Bears look like a serious Super Bowl contender, if the keep Rex Grossman in one piece.

The Bills will try to control the clock with Willis McGahee’s running. McGahee already has 389 yards rushing this season, but the Bears only allow 80.8 yards on the ground. So JP Losman may have to pass a little bit to open up running lanes for McGahee. Losman does have four receivers with at least 10 catches this season, but he better be careful against the Bears pass defense. The Bears haven’t allowed a TD pass and have 6 pick-offs so far this season.

The Bears are running an incredibly balanced offense (129 runs, 127 passes) this season. Look for Rex Grossman to keep the Bills defense on their toes with short passes to TE Desmond Clark (15 rec, 232 yds) and WR Mushin Muhammad (24 rec, 324 yds). As soon as the defense creeps up a little, BOOM, Grossman will go deep to WR Bernard Berrian (15 rec, 316 yds). The Bears will also try to pound at the Bills with running back Thomas Jones (84 carries, 279 yards).

I look for the Bears to stop Willis McGahee and make JP Losman beat them. That won’t happen, and the Bears will win this game with ease.

Bills lose starting guard

Chris Villarrial will miss up to three weeks with a high ankle sprain. This could hurt the Bills running game because Villarrial is a mean guy and a good run blocker.

JP Losman improving

JP Losman is improving right before our very eyes. Losman has been better about throwing the ball away or taking off (10 carries, 41 yards) then throwing the ball up for grabs or taking a sack (11 so far this season). Losman is usually just asked not to lose the game by limiting his mistakes with the ball. Losman has completed 71 of 111 passes (64%) for 797 yards with 3 TDs and only 1 interception. Losman has a sparkling 90.6 QB rating so far. The Bills will always be a run-first team with Jauron as the head coach, but Losman might convince him with his play to loosen the grip on the playbook.

Bills defense leads way in 17-12 win

The Buffalo Bills played good defense again on Sunday afternoon against the Minnesota Vikings. LBs Angelo Crowell (10 tackles and a interception) and London Fletcher (4 tackles and an interception) led the Bills to victory. The Bills held the Vikings to 63 yards rushing on 16 carries (3.9 ypc). The Vikings did complete 25 of 44 passes for 267 net yards passing, but it didn’t result in many points.

JP Losman is maturing in front of our very eyes. Losman completed 23 of 32 passes for 222 yards and a TD, he also ran 4 times for 17 yards. RB Willis McGahee was a workhorse on Sunday, getting 28 carries for 78 yards (2.8 ypc) and a TD. Lee Evans caught 7 passes for 90 yards, Josh Reed caught 4 passes for 43 yards and Peerless Price caught 5 passes for 40 yards and a TD.

Bills linebackers playing tough

The Bills linebackers are leading the defense and playing well enough to keep the Bills in games, even with their offense….which isn’t too good. London Fletcher has been his usual dominant self. Fletcher has 27 tackles and a fumble recovery. Angelo Crowell has 26 tackles, a sack and an interception. Rookie LB Keith Ellison (from Oregon State) already has 22 tackles and is looking like a steal in the Draft.
