The Bills are a little shaky at the QB position and receiver positions so it just makes sense that they would try to run more. Dick Jauron is one of those old school coaches that likes defense and the running game. It would seem that he is a good fit for this kind of roster.
Willis McGahee has been a very good player the last two seasons. Last year defenses ganged up on him as JP Losman didn’t scare anyone with his arm. McGahee still rushed for over a 1,000 yards anyway. McGahee has rebounded strongly from his knee injury suffered against the Buckeyes in the National Title Game a few years ago. The Bills are starting to reap the rewards from picking him in the first round even though he would have to rehab for a year. In 32 games (26 starts), McGahee has rushed for 2,375 yards (3.9 ypc) and 18 TD runs. He also caught 50 passes for 347 yards. McGahee has increased his yards rushing each season and I see that trend continuing this season.
The A-Train, Anthony Thomas was signed to back-up McGahee and he should do a fine job as he rested up for the job last season (only rushing for 92 yards with the Saints). Thomas is a power-runner that has two 1,000 yard rushing seasons to his credit. In 60 games (39 starts), Thomas has rushed for 3,424 yards (3.8 ypc) and 21 TD. He also has caught 76 passes for 522 yards.
The third back is third year player Shaud Williams. Williams is productive when he plays, but he doesn’t get much of a chance. Williams has never started a game, but played in 20 the last two seasons. Williams has 328 rushing yards (3.8 ypc) and 2 TD. Williams has also caught 20 passes for 137 yards.
None of the three running backs has ever caught a TD pass, but I think that will change this season.
