Takeo Spikes may return for week #3

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, Big Bills News by ravenhater on Monday 31 July 2006 at 1:46 pm

The Bills are going to take it easy with Spikes as he is recovering from an Achilles injury that limited him to three games last season. The Bills need him healthy, and will hold him out of the complete pre-season.

Spikes is a difference maker on the defense that was sorely missed last season. Spikes has played 114 games in his career and has 808 tackles, 20.5 sacks, 12 interceptions (3 of which were returned for TDs) and has defended 30 passes.

John McCargo (1, DT)

Many thought that the Bills reached with this pick to trading up to get him. As Lee Corso would say, “Not so fast my friend”. McCargo was thought of to be the third best defensive tackle in the draft and the Bills thought their was a huge drop-off between McCargo and the next DT. McCargo was a guy they liked all along. He plays with a good motor and is very good in pursuit where most tackles are not. McCargo gives it his all every down. McCargo has excellent quickness off the snap which allows him to hit gaps and get into the backfield.

McCargo played in 36 games at NC State (29 starts) and made 123 tackles, 28 tackles for loss and had 3 1/2 sacks. McCargo was a good pick and all the naysayers will see that starting in September.

Donte Whitner (1,S)

The consensus on Whitner was that the Bills took him too high. But the Bills thinks he fits their defense perfectly with his aggressive play. Whitner is good in run support but probably needs hidden in a zone defense because his man-to-man coverage needs some work. His aggressive play could be a small detriment to him because he’s not the biggest safety around at 5′10″, 205. Whitner is super fast though as he routinely runs a 4.4 40.

Whitner played in 35 games at Ohio State (17 starts) and compiled 164 tackles, broke up 9 passes and intercepted 5 passes. Whitner should be a started soon, if not opening day.

QB situation is murky

Who to start at QB….that is the big question in Buffalo, New York. The best answer would probably be Kelly Holcomb until he gets hurt. Holcomb has never started more than eight games or thrown for over 1,797 yards or more than 10 touchdowns in a season. When Holcomb plays he put up decent numbers. Holcomb has appeared in 34 games (21 starts) and completed 64.6% of his passes for 5,401 yards. Holcomb has 37 TD passes and 37 interceptions in his career, and alot of those picks were a a bad time.

JP Losman was the Bills’ first round pick two years ago and looks severely overmatched at the NFL level. Losman has “happy” feet which is a bad thing for a QB to have. Losman has only completed 49.8% of his passes for his career as he looks lost on the field.

The wildcard is Craig Nall. Nall has limited experience as he has been Brett Favre’s back-up, but in his limited (usually mop-up time) experience he has produced. He has only appeared in six games (no starts) and has completed 69.7% of his passes for 314 yards with 4 TD and no picks. Will Nall follow in the footsteps of some of Brett Favre’s other caddys, namely Mark Brunell, Matt Hasselbeck and Aaron Brooks? Only time will tell.
